The Pittsburgh Steelers are ready to enter the 2025 NFL season with Mason Rudolph as their starting quarterback. That being said, they are also hopeful that they will not need to.
Of course, everyone is well aware, by now, that Pittsburgh has been actively pursuing four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers following his release from the New York Jets. They also allowed veterans Russell Wilson and Justin Fields to depart in free agency, leaving themselves in this precarious quarterback position.
There were many different free agent quarterbacks available earlier in the offseason, but the Steelers have seen most of them sign with different teams.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers OC Todd Haley Believes Aaron Rodgers Is Their Best Option

Since the start of free agency, Pittsburgh as seen quarterbacks like Sam Darnold, Wilson, Fields, Jameis Winston, and others sign with other teams. Others, like Geno Smith, were traded.
Now, with the best quarterbacks off the market, former Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley believes that Rodgers is his former team’s best option.
“When you don’t have a quarterback—again, we have the whole Aaron Rodgers elephant in the room. I understand that, which, to me, is the best short-term option available for the Steelers,” Haley said (via Steelers Wire) . “He’s the best answer, in my opinion, for right now.”
Obviously, at 41 years old, Rodgers is a short-term answer for any team that he might play for. And while Pittsburgh is the only one that has shown interest so far, New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr suffered an injury that might cost him the whole 2025 NFL season.
All of a sudden, Pittsburgh may have competition.
Aaron Rodgers Appears Poised to Play for the Pittsburgh Steelers

While the Saints are now a team being linked to Rodgers by NFL analysts, there has not been any official reports from the team that they might try to pursue the four-time NFL MVP. As of this writing, Pittsburgh remains the only team to have done so.
Additionally, it was Rodgers who initiated the meeting with Steelers coaches and front office personnel last month. He also set up a throwing session with two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf, whom Pittsburgh acquired via trade earlier this offseason.
At this point, it seems as if Rodgers is trying to decide between retirement and Pittsburgh. To be sure, even if he does not retire, he will not be around long.
It is very likely that the Steelers will look at drafting a quarterback this year, and it would be ideal if he would be able to sit behind Rodgers for a year.
Pittsburgh has made it known that they would prefer an answer from Rodgers before the NFL Draft, but also that they are willing to wait a bit longer. It will be interesting to see what happens.
