The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback room now looks vastly different from what it was in 2023. Heading to the 2024 NFL season, the Steelers have Russell Wilson and Justin Fields as the prominent faces in that position group, while last year, Kenny Pickett, Mitchell Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph were the ones who shared the QB duties. Well, Pickett, Trubisky, and Rudolph are no longer around in Pittsburgh.
NFL insider there’s no Pittsburgh Steelers QB competition
Wilson is expected to start in Week 1 for the Steelers, though, Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin hasn’t completely shut the door on Fields’ chances to take over as QB1. That said, Pittsburgh insider Mark Kaboly noted that he doesn’t think there is an actual QB battle in Pittsburgh.
“Non-existent and nothing to it,” Kaboly said about the rumors of a Wilson vs. Fields competition for the top quarterback spot during a recent appearance on 93.7 The Fan (h/t Anthony G. Halkias II of Steeler Nation).
Wilson is easily the more accomplished quarterback than Fields. He has a Super Bowl ring and a nine-time Pro Bowler. Fields is still young, though, with the potential to turn things around in Pittsburgh after having quite an adventure under center with the Chicago Bears. That is if he’ll get time to see action with the Steelers, as it appears Wilson is firmly atop the QB pecking order.
Wilson is not coming off a sparkling tenure with his last team either, as he did not even come close to fulfilling the vision the Denver Broncos had when they gave up a lot to acquire him via a trade with the Seattle Seahawks, not to mention signing him to an enormous five-year extension. With the Steelers giving him a one-year deal, Wilson will look to get revive his career that is already on the back nine.
