The Pittsburgh Steelers made headlines today with a report revealing that they plan to release veteran QB Mitchell Trubisky. This opens up a crucial spot on the roster for the 2024 NFL season. So, which quarterback can take Trubisky’s place on the roster? These are some of the best options for the Steelers.
1. Kirk Cousins
One of the biggest names that could be available for the Steelers is Kirk Cousins. However, there are two big concerns if they were to move forward with him. The first is his age. Cousins is 36 years old, making him one of the oldest starting quarterbacks in the NFL.
More importantly, there could be some health concerns relating to concerns. That is because he had a season-ending Achilles injury this past season. Now, there could be questions as to if Cousins can return to his old self. If so, the Steelers could potentially make a run with him.
2. Ryan Tannehill
Another big name linked to the Steelers is Ryan Tannehill. There are two main reasons for this. The first is that the Tennessee Titans are likely going to move forward with rookie QB Will Levis.
On top of this, a familiar face is on the Steelers’ coaching staff. That is Arthur Smith, who served as Tannehill’s offensive coordinator on the Titans for a couple of seasons. Now, there is a chance that these two can reunite.
3. Jimmy Garoppolo
One quarterback the Steelers should not sleep on is Jimmy Garoppolo. He had a rough go in Las Vegas, being in the middle of a clash between head coach Josh McDaniels and the rest of the locker room. As a result, McDaniels was fired and Garoppolo was benched about halfway through last season.
What does this mean for Garoppolo and the Raiders? It means they are likely parting ways before the 2024 NFL season. Once Garoppolo gets released, the Steelers may feel like they can snag a talented veteran quarterback while the buy-in is low.
4. Justin Fields
Finally, the Steelers could decide to trade for Justin Fields. They would likely have to do so if the Chicago Bears decide they want to draft a new quarterback. In terms of draft compensation, this would likely be the most expensive option. However, considering Fields is still on his rookie contract, he may be a smaller salary cap hit compared to the other three quarterbacks on this list.
