Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has had a remarkable 17-year tenure. Tomlin has left his mark not only on this franchise but the NFL. Today’s win over the Seattle Seahawks continues a remarkable streak for Tomlin.
Mike Tomlin Has 17th Straight Winning Season
Believe it or not, the Pittsburgh Steelers have never had a season where they finished under .500 with Mike Tomlin as their head coach. This is a winning streak that dates back to 2007. The worst a Steelers team under Tomlin has finished is 8-8.
Living on the Edge
Pittsburgh finishing over .500 has not always been a certainty. There were three times during this stretch when the Steelers finished exactly 8-8. Plus, they had a scheduling change that looked like it would be a disadvantage for this streak.
In 2021, the NFL added a 17th game to the regular season schedule. This meant that Pittsburgh could no longer finish .500 in the regular season unless they had a tie in one of their games. However, this did not deter Tomlin and the Steelers.
Pittsburgh finished 9-7-1 in 2021, 9-8 in 2022, and are currently 9-7. On top of this, the Steelers did it in 2023 despite starting three different quarterbacks and taking 11 games to outgain an opponent. Yet here we are.
Pittsburgh Steelers Moving Forward
Now, the Pittsburgh Steelers can focus on making the playoffs. Despite the win today, it is going to be an uphill battle. Pittsburgh needs to win their final regular season game against the Baltimore Ravens. Then, it gets interesting.
They will likely need the Buffalo Bills to lose to the Miami Dolphins. If that does not happen, then the Jacksonville Jaguars will have to lose to the Tennessee Titans. If neither of those happens, the Steelers have to hope that the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts somehow tie.
