The Pittsburgh Steelers have been struck with mediocrity over the past several years. While they aren’t in an embarrassingly long playoff drought, it has been a while since the Steelers last won a playoff game.
Kirk Cousins to the Pittsburgh Steelers?
If the Pittsburgh Steelers want to turn things around and find success in the playoffs at last, Pro Football Focus’ Brad Spielberger brought up the idea of Pittsburgh going after Kirk Cousins, who could be a free agent soon (h/t Heavy).
“Ryan Tannehill is the easier connection because of the Tennessee days with [him and Arthur Smith],” Spielberger said. “But I also wonder if [the Steelers] sit there and say, ‘Look, we’ve gone 9-8, 10-7 a bunch of years in a row with frankly, replacement level quarterback play. Below average no question about it.’
“Cameron Heyward is going to be 35, I think, next year. T.J. Watt is going to be 30. I’m sure he’s going to be good for several more years, but maybe they just say, ‘You know what, let’s make a bit of a splash. Go get Kirk Cousins, and we think we can win a couple playoff games with everything the same but then you add in a clear upgrade at quarterback.’
Cousins has played for the Minnesota Vikings over the last six seasons, during which the NFC North division franchise has made the postseason just twice. Even then, Cousins does come across as a potential upgrade under center for the Steelers over Kenny Pickett, who still has plenty of work to do if he is to prove to the Pittsburgh Steelers that he should be the team’s long-term quarterback. Through two seasons in the NFL, Pickett is 25-24 with 4,474 passing yards and 13 touchdowns as well as 13 interceptions.
Perhaps it would take the Pittsburgh Steelers a new quarterback to unlock the true potential of their offense, but perhaps they would ultimately elect to give Picket at least one more season as a starter to see if he clicks with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s system.
