The Philadelphia Eagles own three picks in the top 50 ahead of the 2024 NFL draft, a welcome sight for a team trying to return to the Super Bowl after a disappointing campaign last season. On Thursday, Philadelphia made a move for a veteran tight end, liking taking that position off the draft board, or at least in the early rounds. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Eagles are in line to ink tight end C.J. Uzomah to a one-year deal.
Uzomah passed his physical on Thursday, the final step for the tight end before he can sign papers with the NFC East club. Uzomah’s signing will end a short two-year stint with the New York Jets.
C.J. Uzomah: Lands with Philadelphia Eagles
Free agent C.J. Uzomah plans to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles this week. Uzomah, a fifth-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft, spent his first seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. The Auburn product played a reserve role during his first three seasons before becoming a full-time starter in 2018, registering 43 receptions, 439 yards, and three scores. After a two-touchdown campaign in 2019, Uzomah missed nearly the entirety of the 2020 season due to a torn Achilles tendon. The six-foot-six, 271-pounder bounced back nicely in 2021, catching a career-high 49 passes for 493 yards and five touchdowns.

Uzomah played well during the Bengals Super Bowl run that same season, collecting 15 receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown. Uzomah caught a pair of passes in the team’s Super Bowl loss against the Los Angeles Rams. The now-31-year-old inked a deal with the New York Jets the following season, catching 21 passes in 15 games in 2022. Uzomah struggled to produce last season, tallying only eight receptions before being released early last month.
Philadelphia Eagles: Adding to Tight End Room
The Philadelphia Eagles added to their tight end depth on Thursday with the planned addition of free-agent pass-catcher C.J. Uzomah. Star tight end Dallas Goedert remains atop the depth chart after posting 59 catches for 592 yards and three scores. Goedert has averaged at least 40 receiving yards per game with the Eagles since 2019.
Alongside veterans Dallas Goedert and C.J. Uzomah, the Eagles house Albert Okwuegbunam Jr. and Grant Calcaterra. Okwuegbunam Jr. did not register a reception in four games last season. He tallied 54 catches in three seasons with the Denver Broncos from 2020 to 2022. Meanwhile, Calcaterra has nine receptions in two seasons with the Eagles.
