After the nightmarish end to the season, the Philadelphia Eagles have plenty of questions that they need to address. Nick Siriani needs to pay close attention to how the Eagles offense as they were neutered after losing to the San Francisco 49ers.
One of the biggest questions they have to address is whether they will provide a contract to D’Andre Swift. The four-year RB is due a big payday as he was one of the most dynamic running backs in the NFL.
However, his muted showings during the final weeks of the 2023 season made people question if he really is the right man to cut up opposing defenses.
Philadelphia Eagles’ D’Andre Swift dilemma, explained
Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia wrote a detailed opinion piece about the performance of the Eagles’ RB room during the 2023 season.
He wrote a pretty damning opinion that sees him wanting the former Detroit Lion out of the NFC East:
I don’t think Swift will be the guy to change that but it’s also worth noting that a big contract might just not be out there at all for Swift. That seems weird to say after he had his first 1,000-yard season and was named to the Pro Bowl. But the running back position has been devalued in recent seasons and Miles Sanders probably didn’t help that by struggling in 2023 after getting a solid deal with the Panthers. There might be a chance that Swift tests the open market and doesn’t find the type of multi-year extension he wants. In that case, the door should be open to a return for Philly.
It’s a surprising assessment for D’Andre Swift, who managed to rush for 1049 yards and 5 TDs this season. However, his incredible showings against the Minnesota Vikings (176 yards and 1 TD on 28 carries) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (130 yards on 16 carries) may have doomed him in the eyes of Eagles fans.
While Philadelphia Eagles fans are united in wanting to see him out, he does provide value to the organization. However, it’s unlikely that the team will want to provide him the money he wants.
If Nick Siriani can convince D’Andre Swift to take a pay cut, maybe a future where he still wears Philly green is possible.
