Although considered a contender in the NFL, the Philadelphia Eagles late-season collapse proves the need for several changes, specifically on defense. In this regard, the team can take a look at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Lavonte David in free agency.
After finishing second in the NFC East division with an 11-6 record, the Eagles went out disappointingly to the Buccaneers in their playoff match. Thanks to a 32-9 loss, Philadelphia has suffered one of the worst losses in NFL history.
This massive blowout of a loss at the hands of Tampa Bay just showed that Philadelphia’s 30th-ranked defense just won’t cut it anymore. While the team’s offense is in the top ten, the front office needs to make moves to drastically improve the defensive lineup right away.
In this regard, the Eagles have several options to consider to include in their budget for 2024. Among the names that can provide results for Philadelphia comes from the Buccaneers’ Lavonte David.
Why The Philadelphia Eagles Must Consider Lavonte David In Free Agency
In order for the team not to make the same mistakes during the previous campaign, the Eagles must get free agency right. Aaron Schatz explains why David is the ideal target in his article for ESPN:
“There’s not much difference between last season’s offense and the offense that won the NFC two years ago, other than the potential retirement of center Jason Kelce. The differences are on defense. But that’s all the more reason for a still-strong veteran to sign up for a run with the Eagles.
David would be a huge upgrade at weakside linebacker. He was tied for fifth last season with 33 defeats, a stat that adds tackles for loss, turnovers and plays to prevent a conversion on third or fourth down. David is near the top of the league in this stat every year, and he still has great instincts at age 34,” Schatz wrote.
Getting David to sign a new contract will be a huge win for the Eagles. While one man won’t change Philadelphia’s defense overnight, this is a solid step toward that goal.
Even at his age, David is considered a great target for Philadelphia this offseason. If the front office pulls this off, expect the Eagles to improve their defense next season.
