Even though the Philadelphia Eagles’ playoff run ended at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a disastrous fashion, they can still rectify that mistake next year. For that to happen, though, they have to find a way to cut Kevin Byard and his $25 million contract in the offseason.
The Eagles started last season in a dominant manner when they had a 10-1 run in the NFL. Unfortunately, the team lost five out of the last six games, leading them to place second in the NFC East division. Adding more to their woe, Philadelphia was booted out of the playoffs by the Buccaneers with a score of 32-9.
That massive loss led to the firing of offensive coordinator Brian Johnson and defensive coordinator Sean Desai shortly after. But more than these two, the Eagles may have to let safety Kevin Bryad go to give the front office enough room to target other players in the offseason.
Why The Philadelphia Eagles Need to Cut Kevin Byard From The Roster
While Bryad was a good midseason addition for the Eagles, he’s ultimately expendable for other pieces. Aaron Schatz explains more in his article for ESPN:
“Byard was an interesting midseason addition for the Eagles but ultimately wasn’t much help as Philadelphia crumbled down the stretch. He’s a good player, but he also can be used to get the Eagles some salary cap space. Cutting Byard would save the Eagles $13 million on the cap with only $1.4 million in dead money this year. How to replace Byard?
Well, it’s a strong year for safeties on the free agent market, especially safeties who are still in their primes. Possible candidates for the Eagles include Antoine Winfield Jr. (26, Buccaneers); Xavier McKinney (25, Giants); and Kyle Dugger (28, Patriots),” Schatz wrote.
With Byrad gone from the lineup, the options will surely open up for Philadelphia. For sure, the Eagles will do everything they can to improve for the NFL season ahead.
