No one could argue that the New England Patriots are in an absolute nose dive to close out the season. After over twenty years of absolute dominance, New England has finally entered the cellar as the offense is a complete dumpster fire and the defense has dramatically underperformed. Legendary Head Coach Bill Belichick appears to have one foot out the door as the team seems to know that the team will be in a full rebuild going into the offseason.
Patriots TE Defends the Way his Team are Closing out the Season
While the team appears to be tanking for a star quarterback in the draft next season, people within the New England organization would take heavy offense to that assertion. Backup tight end Pharaoh Brown certainly had something to say about that recently when he spoke to New England beat reporter Zack Cox of NESN.
“The (3-11) record isn’t what everybody wanted it to be, and you always hear people saying, ‘Oh, we don’t got nothing to lose,'” Brown said. “But when you really look at it, we’ve all got families. We’ve all got people that care for us. We’ve all got a lot of people around here that put a lot of stuff into this and that’s enough to play for.”
Brown mentioned in the interview that he thinks his team has plenty of reason to keep playing when he spoke to the team during a team meeting prior to the New England victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in December. I am certainly one of the people that believe that the New England players are phoning it in for the final three games but Brown exclaimed that that is certainly not the case. Brown asserts that the players will continue to battle for Belichick and the remaining coaching staff until the end of the season.
“So just having that gratitude for the game and just going out and having that confidence,” Brown continued. “I feel like when I hear, ‘Oh, you’ve got nothing to lose,’ your confidence is low. No, the results are not working, but you’ve just got to keep that confidence.”
It has been reported that Belichick wishes to remain in New England after the end of the season. If that’s true, it puts an enormous amount of pressure on owner Robert Kraft regarding the decision to fire the head coach. While Belichick has clearly had an amazing run, he is certainly taking the team in the wrong direction after Tom Brady left several years ago for the warm beaches of South Florida.
New England will move forward this Sunday against the competitive Denver Broncos. To no ones surprise at this point, New England will open as heavy underdogs in the betting. While I believe what Brown is trying to preach, its certainly not a great position to have to vocally argue with your fans that you are still trying.
