At this point, even Patrick Mahomes’ most vocal critics cannot deny the importance of his existence to the team. He once again showed how crucial he is to the Kansas City Chiefs offense after throwing the Super Bowl-winning pass to Mecole Hardman in overtime against the San Francisco 49ers.
His vital performance during the game saw him snag another important award that builds toward his legacy and puts him in a prime position in the GOAT conversation.
Patrick Mahomes gets Super Bowl LVIII MVP honors
The Macon Telegraph published a piece about Mahomems’ incredible achievement and what his third MVP award means to his stand in the sport’s everlasting GOAT debate:
Leading Kansas City to a thrilling 25-22 overtime win against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes won his second straight Super Bowl MVP award and third overall on Sunday night in Las Vegas.
Guiding the Chiefs to back-to-back titles and their third in the past five seasons, the 28-year-old Mahomes joins Joe Montana as three-time winners, trailing only Tom Brady, who won the award five times.
Patrick Mahomes did put on an incredible performance that ultimately spelled the difference between him and the rest of the players on the field. He capped off another Super Bowl-winning season with 333 passing yards for two touchdowns. While he did throw a pick, his incredible QB play was the key to the Chiefs eking out a narrow win against a tough San Francisco squad.
What does this Super Bowl MVP mean for Mahomes in the GOAT ladder?
Almost everyone in the Chiefs Kingdom will argue that Patrick Mahomes is already the greatest football player to ever play the game. The way he transformed the game the same way Stephen Curry did with basketball already makes him the GOAT in their eyes.
However, he may still have some ground to cover before he is the undisputed greatest. Joe Montana has one more Super Bowl ring than Mahomes at the moment. Meanwhile, Tom Brady has an incredible seven Super Bowl wins with the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
However, it’s important to remember that Patrick Mahomes is only 28. With the way his game is built, he can play well into his forties if he properly handles his decline in athleticism.
There’s plenty of time left for Patrick Mahomes to establish himself as the most dominant QB in NFL history. And with the way he’s playing, he may find the GOAT moniker attached to his name sooner than later.
