Chris Ballard and the Indianapolis Colts could not be happier with the offseason they have put together. It was obvious that their biggest priority was retaining some of their top talent that could have left in NFL free agency. They also added quite a few talented players in the 2024 NFL Draft.
While the offseason has been a successful one for the Colts, there are still some holes that they need to try to fill. Thankfully, there are plenty of veteran free agents still available that could help fill the voids.
One of the big positions of need for Indianapolis is at the cornerback position. They have some talent at the position, but they could use more help. There is one player in particular that would make a ton of sense.
Indianapolis Colts Urged To Reunite With Defensive Back In Free Agency
NFL Trade Rumors took a look at the remaining best free agents on the market and they have the Indianapolis Colts listed as the top potential destination for one of them. That player is former Colts’ cornerback Stephon Gilmore.
“While the Colts traded him last year, it was with the expectation that 2023 wouldn’t be a contending season for them. Now the Colts look poised to make noise in the AFC South. Gilmore would address their biggest need and provide a valuable veteran presence in what is a young secondary overall. Although he’s turning 34, he was still a quality cover corner last season in Dallas.”
Gilmore put together a very successful season with the Indianapolis Colts back in 2022. He racked up 66 total tackles to go along with two interceptions and 11 defended passes. Those numbers would be valuable to have on the defense this year.
It is surprising that no team has picked him up so far. He has been heavily connected to the Carolina Panthers, but not deal has materialized for him. Perhaps the Colts could swoop in and steal him off the market.
Outside of Gilmore, there is another cornerback that could make sense. Former Miami Dolphins’ star Xavien Howard is also available. The Indianapolis Colts should absolutely look into signing one of those two options.
All of that being said, it will be interesting to see if the Colts get aggressive late in the offseason. If they want to be a serious playoff contender, adding a veteran starting cornerback would be wise. Gilmore is a great fit, he’s familiar with the system, and is well worth taking a long look at.
