As they always say, records are there to be broken. It didn’t take long before Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs upended Joe Burrow after the Cincinnati Bengals signed their cornerstone quarterback to a landscape-shifting five-year, $275 million contract extension this offseason.
Cool Joe’s reign as the highest-paid player in league history did not last long.
Patrick Mahomes is Highest-Paid QB in NFL History
You could almost see it coming. There was just no way the Chiefs were going to let their own superstar play second fiddle to Burrow, who currently stands as one of the greatest challengers to Mahomes’ title as the top QB in the NFL.
On Monday, it was announced that Mahomes and the Chiefs had agreed to restructure the two-time MVP’s deal — the same one that he signed in 2020 for 10 years and $450 million. After the adjustments to his current contract, Mahomes is the top dog once again now that he’s set to pocket $208.1 million over the course of the next four years.
NFL Twitter Reacts to Patrick Mahomes Surpassing Joe Burrow
It comes as no surprise that NFL Twitter has been set ablaze by this stunning turn of events. It’s also no major shock that Burrow has seen his name dragged into some of the funniest tweet reactions to Mahomes’ new deal:

I’m not entirely sure Joe Burrow is feeling blue after learning about these developments. After all, he’s still going to get his money. It’s just that salary-wise, he will now need to settle for second place behind Patrick Mahomes.
For what it’s worth, the Chiefs and the Bengals are slated to take the field on December 31st in their one and only regular-season matchup this season. More than a few NFL fans have already encircled that date on their respective calendars as they eagerly anticipate the battle between two of the greatest quarterbacks to ever pick up a football — and incidentally, the two richest players in league history.
