Former Oklahoma football wideout Drake Stoops is turning heads at the East-West Shrine Bowl this week, dominating one-on-one drills and showing out during team practice. However, some people have not bought into the Stoops hype, including a former head coach from Oklahoma’s biggest rivals, the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Per On3 correspondent Eddie Radosevich, former bench boss Pat Jones believes he knows why Stoops is participating in the Shrine Bowl instead of the more well-known Senior Bowl.
Pat Jones: Non-Believer in Drake Stoops
Pat Jones had a simple one-sentence reason why Drake Stoops did not receive an invite to the Senior Bowl. “He’s not that good,” said Jones about Stoops.

“He’s not that good”
Imbecile moronic comment.

Jones led the Oklahoma State Cowboys as their bench boss from 1984 to 1994, routinely squaring off against the Oklahoma football program. Jones could believe Stoops doesn’t have the pedigree or talent to feature in the prominent Senior Bowl, or he could still have some remaining ill will against the Oklahoma Sooners. Jones coached at Oklahoma State for eleven seasons but never once beat Oklahoma. He did tie one time in 1992. The Cowboys received sanctions during his time with OSU, including a bowl ban for recruiting violations. Jones later coached in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins and Oakland Raiders before retiring in 2006.
Oklahoma Football WR Drake Stoop: Making Noise at Shrine Bowl
Search Drake Stoops on Twitter (also known as X); the results are the former Oklahoma star making plays in one-on-one and team drills. Stoops, who made countless plays for the Sooners over the past three seasons, has carried over his playmaking to the East-West Shrine Bowl. He has beaten defensive backs in many routes, including double moves, speed cuts, and deep routes.
Stoops joined Oklahoma as a preferred walk-on in 2018. The son of former longtime Oklahoma football coach and BCS National Champion Bob Stoops, Drake caught just eight passes during his first two seasons. He snagged 15 passes for 219 yards and two scores during his third season in 2020. Stoops recorded 16 receptions for 191 yards and two touchdowns in 2021 before snagging 39 passes in 2022. However, he broke out last year, tallying 84 passes for 962 yards and ten touchdowns in 13 games. He had three games over ten receptions and 100 yards receiving this season.
