Odell to Dallas? 2 questions need to be answered.

The Dallas Cowboys are coming off the bye week sitting pretty at 6-2, and Odell Beckham Jr. is still out there. The super bowl contenders stood pat at the trade deadline after trying to get a deal done for Brandin Cooks. As it often does, money got in the way and Dallas finds itself still looking to add a wide receiver.

Jerry Jones made it clear that Odell Beckham Jr. is firmly on the Cowboys’ radar and the player himself has named the Cowboys as a possible destination. Would Odell Beckham really help the team get over the top, or would he be a distraction under the microscope of the Star?

Where would Odell Beckham Jr. fit in?

The Cowboys are as familiar as anyone with what Odell Beckham can do. Dallas was the victim of arguably the most iconic catch over the last 20 years courtesy of OBJ. The talent is undeniably for the 30-year-old receiver and could be exactly what the Cowboys need to get over the top.

Odell Beckham Jr. could line up all over the formation but would likely find a home in the slot. The last time he spent significant time in that role was in 2016 when he compiled 32 catches for over 400 yards and two touchdowns.

Would-be-teammate CeeDee Lamb has spent some time in the slot as well, opening up the chance for Odell to be used on the outside as the matchup warrants.

The Cowboys’ wide receivers have combined to produce 24 first-downs on receptions so far this season. In the playoffs last year, Odell Beckham Jr. netted 15 first-down grabs all by himself. Do you think the Cowboys could use a player like that?

Would Odell Beckham Jr. be a distraction?

These aren’t your older brother’s Dallas Cowboys. Along with a more practical approach from the front office, head coach Mike McCarthy isn’t about to allow a player to ruin his opportunity for validation. Before the season, McCarthy was viewed as a lame duck and has since guided the team to 6-2 with a backup QB for the better part of the year.

The Cowboys have a strong nucleus of both young and proven players who aren’t likely to veer off track. Besides, would a team really allow its third wide receiver to become a problem in the locker room? Ceedee is the clear WR1 and Gallup has been paid handsomely by the aforementioned brass.

Adding a player like Odell Beckham Jr. certainly makes sense for a team that views itself as championship material. The Cowboys don’t need the Odell of old to show up and be an alpha dog. They need a fast, retriever-type to go out and grab the paper before the rain soaks it. His smooth route-running and soft hands will make a fine target for Dak Prescott as defenses try to account for Lamb, Zeke, Pollard, and Schultz.

If the Cowboys’ front office makes this move, it says to the team that the time is now. What a vote of confidence it would be to say “we believe this can be a special year” and go for it.  Zeke Elliott and Micah Parsons have made their pitches to Odell Beckham Jr. The locker room wants it to happen so it would be a win for all involved.

What is keeping Odell Beckham Jr. from signing?

The average fan may be wondering why the Cowboys haven’t put this one away. The reason is simple. OBJ is playing the field and trying to get as much cheddar as he can. He would love for a contending team to become more desperate for his services. With it being November 10th, he still has time to acclimate to a new club prior to a playoff run. He and his agent have a timetable in mind to maximize his earnings and he would be a fool to rush in.

Make no mistake, he will sign with a contending team, and now we know that Dallas is a major contender for his services.

If you doubt the saltiness of Odell Beckham Jr.’s game, I suggest you check out the clip below and see if it pleases your palette.
