It is now time in the NFL season to think about who could possibly win the MVP award. We have seen some incredible moments from all positions in the NFL this year. But, we know that the MVP is usually awarded to a Quarterback and rightfully so. Quarterbacks are the center of attention on any NFL team, they are the most criticized for losses and celebrated when they win. So, you could say that the MVP award should almost always go to a quarterback, I am here to say that this statement is false. Yes, there are some quarterbacks this year that could be looked at as the “Most Valuable Player” in the league but I think that we should look two other positional players for this award.
Christian McCaffrey: CMC has been on a tear ever since he joined the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers were already a great team before he got there, but adding a talent such as CMC is a massive upgrade to their offense and their firepower. His ability to receive out of the backfield and run in-between the tackles is up there with the greatest running backs of all time. He currently leads the league in rush yards and rush+rec touchdowns. His impact on this 49ers team has been huge for the development of Brock Purdy and how he commands this offense. CMC is most definitely the most valuable player on this team, and I would go as far to say he is the most valuable player in the league just based off of how he has transformed the running back position in his years in the NFL.
Now, I am going to switch conferences and explain why I believe that this next player should be the NFL’s MVP.
Tyreek Hill: Cheetah has been one of the most dynamic players in the NFL ever since he arrived in Kansas City back in 2016. We saw what he and Patrick Mahomes did for years which included a Super Bowl in the 2019-2020 season. Hill was traded to Miami in 2022, and what he has done for this Miami offense since he arrived has been nothing short of jaw dropping. Pairing him with Tua Tagovailoa and the complex yet exciting play calling of Mike McDaniel, the duo have been putting up video game numbers week in and week out.
Tyreek said before the season that he wanted to get 2,000 yards receiving, which has never been done before. The closest was Calvin Johnson in 2012 when he had 1,964. Hill at this point in the season has 1,481, with just 5 games remaining in the regular season he will need to average 104.4 yards per game in order to eclipse 2,000. If Tyreek is able to pass the 2,000 yard mark this season I don’t see any reason as to why he should not get the MVP award. Now, obviously there is 1 extra game and that could throw a wrench into that, but honestly no matter what, putting up 2,000 yards as a receiver is impressive no matter what way you look at it.
Given from what I have said above, it still probably won’t be enough because at the end of the day the MVP is mostly given to quarterbacks. But, it would be really nice change of pace to see a non-quarterback win this award. Given the last non-quarterback to win was Adrian Peterson in 2012. Both players are deserving of this award, but if I had to pick who I think should win the MVP for the NFL this year it should be Tyreek Hill. There might be some bias to that given I am a huge Dolphins fan, but just seeing how he has transformed this offense and how he has elevated Tua’s game to another level, that should all be taken into consideration when it comes time to vote.
There is no correct answer to this question. No one will be satisfied with the answer other than the player who won it and the fanbase that supports the player. The MVP award should no only go to quarterbacks every year, rather it should go to the player who has the most significant impact on their team and the league.
