When it comes to historical records and achievements in the NFL, it’s no surprise to see Tom Brady’s name at the top of the list. One of the most accomplished athletes in the history of sports, the 45-year-old Brady has another anecdote to add to his never ending list. This time, landing #1 on the NFL Top 100 list for the 2022-2023 season. This is the fourth time Brady has taken home the #1 honors since the annual Top 100 list started in 2011. It has been the legendary longevity for Brady to be able to stay at the top of his game. Rarely missing time, he has played in 173 of 177 possible regular season games since 2011. Brady has defied father time (so far) and there’s no reason to think that trend won’t continue this season.

Decline In Tampa?
Since the start of the list, Brady has finished in at least the top seven every year besides for one. Coming off a 2019 season that saw him throw for 4,057 yards-24 touchdowns-8 interceptions, Brady entered the 2020 season in unfamiliar rankings. Outside the top six for the first time. A new beginning in Tampa and an aging Brady, a decline had to be coming, right? Wrong. Brady responded by finishing third in passing yards and second in touchdown passes in the 2020 NFL season. To cap off his still got it season, Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the Super Bowl 31-9 over the Kansas City Chiefs. Brady picked up his seventh Lombardi trophy while also winning his fifth Super Bowl MVP. His five Super Bowl MVPs are two more than Joe Montana on the all-time list.
Encore Season:
After the Super Bowl run in 2020, Brady was left out of the top six and behind two quarterbacks voted ahead of him. Patrick Mahomes was voted No.1, with Aaron Rodgers taking the No.3 spot. Naturally, when Brady is doubted, he shows why he’s the best. The 44-year-old quarterback encored his Super Bowl winning season by leading the league in various passing categories. Thinking there could be a decline in passing, Brady threw 47 more attempts and had 42 more completions than Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert who finished in second. He also threw for 5,316 yards passing yards (300 more than Justin Herbert in second), and led the league in touchdown passes with 43 (two more than Matthew Stafford). Despite the most throws in a season he’s ever had, Brady had a 67.5 completion percentage, the second best of his career (1st: 68.9% in 2007).
*What might be his most impressive stat of the 2021 season is he played all 19 games possible the Buccaneers appeared in.
Heading into 2022-2023:
Tom Brady will go into the 2022-2023 season voted as the No.1 player in the NFL. He has big shoes to fill if he wants to have a repeat of last season. Expectations should be tempered especially for a 45-year-old quarterback, but with Brady most of the time he’ll blow past your expectations of him. With the Super Bowl on his mind as always, Brady should be penciled in for another big season until he proves he can’t play at an elite level anymore.
