The Washington Commanders are expected to be one of the top defensive sides in the NFL this coming season. They have a lot of big names leading an elite defensive line, and this could very well be the driving force that leads this team to what they’re hoping will be an extended postseason run.
NFL Rumors: Commanders Linked to LB Rashaan Evans
In spite of the strengths of their defensive line, however, it wouldn’t hurt for Washington to add one more player via free agency — especially if that player is Rashaan Evans.
Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report recently listed a top free-agent target for all 32 teams in the NFL, and he believes the Commanders should further shore up their defense. A guy like Evans could fit the bill for Washington’s plans in 2023. In fact, Ballentine believes that it’s a travesty that the Tenessee Titian’s former first-round pick still remains unsigned at this point:
“It’s baffling that Rashaan Evans is still a free agent with less than a week to go until the season opener. He’s 27 years old and coming off the best season of his career. He started all 17 games for the Atlanta Falcons and led the way with 159 total tackles while missing only three tackles on the season,” Ballentine wrote.
I see no lies here. Evans isn’t exactly a superstar, but he’s the type of impact player Washington could benefit significantly from.
If there’s any area in Wahington’s defense that could use an upgrade, it would be their linebacker depth. Jamin Davis and Cody Barton are expected to be the starters, and Evans would be an excellent addition to back these two up. In fact, Evans could even give Barton a run for his money in terms of the starting LB position, while also aiding in the development of Davis into potentially, a future star.
Moreover, at 27, Evans is still young enough to be able to develop into an even better player. He could get this chance in Washington, and the Commanders could potentially benefit from the same — especially considering how they should be able to get Evans for cheap.
