NFL: The Washington Commanders are going into an interesting 2023 season. Quarterback Sam Howell has largely impressed for the Commanders this offseason, and he has been expected to become the team’s starting quarterback for some time now. That became official this week as the Commanders will roll with Howell into week one. However, there has been news surrounding a defensive star who would reportedly be on the move this off-season.
Washington Commanders Expected To Shop Star Edge Rusher Chase Young (NFL)
Matt Holder of Bleacher Report anticipates the Commanders to move on from their star edge rusher:
The Washington Commanders are about to be in a tough spot this offseason. Both of their edge-rushers, Montez Sweat and Chase Young, are set to have their rookie contracts expire, and it’s going to be very difficult financially to sign both to long-term deals.
That being said, picking who to pay between the two should be an easy decision: Sweat. He’s been healthy (relatively speaking) and productive every year while Young shined as a rookie and has struggled to stay on the field ever since.
If the Commanders are being realistic with themselves heading into the regular season, they know they’re not going to be competing for a playoff spot. So, it would make sense to get something for the 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year while they still can.
After this season, the Commanders will have to deal with some key free agents. Washington’s 2024 free agents include defensive ends Montez Sweat and Chase Young, safety Kamren Curl, running back Antonio Gibson, and wide receiver Curtis Samuel.
With the salary cap, the Commanders don’t have the option of keeping all of these players. In addition to Sweat and Curl, Rivera acknowledged that the team was in a holding pattern because of ownership issues. Is it possible for the Commanders to trade Young before they have to pay him?

The Commanders are NOT trading Chase Young 😂 not because they hope to keep him but rather they’re not going to get anything remotely close to the 3rd they’ll receive when he leaves via F.A. btw. The Commanders think they’re going to be in wild card contention 🙄
Matt Holder is an idiot. The Commanders need wins or else they will likely have a new head coach next year. The team has improved at every position and I expect a strong season from Sam Howell. They were 8-8-1 last year in the toughest division in football. Why would they trade Young? That makes absolutely no sense.
It’s ignorant to say the Commanders won’t be competing for a playoff spot this season when you consider we were a game away from making the playoffs last season if not for terrible QB play. The team is seemingly going to be a lot better this year having better depth and almost certainly better QB play under Howell. Bienemy will have this offense putting up more numbers than it has in the past, and that alone coupled with how good the defense will be again
Unless a team threw a couple picks at them, like a second and a 3rd or 4th, he won’t move till his contract expires.
