At this point, it remains unclear when Kyler Murray will be available for the Arizona Cardinals. The two-time Pro Bowl quarterback is still rehabbing a torn ACL and meniscus and he is currently on track to miss the start of the new season.
This predicament appears to have forced Arizona’s hand to seek other options at QB. On Thursday, the Cardinals reportedly struck a deal with the Cleveland Browns for veteran quarterback Joshua Dobbs.
Browns Trade Joshua Dobbs to Cardinals
According to league insider Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Cardinals are sending a future fourth-round pick to Cleveland in exchange for Dobbs:
“Trade! The #Browns are sending QB Josh Dobbs and a 2024 seventh-round pick to the #Cardinals for a 2024 fifth-round pick, per sources,” Pelissero wrote in his tweet.
Pelissero also points out that Dobbs is now in the running for the QB1 spot in Arizona as Murray continues to heal up. He will now battle veteran QB Colt McCoy and rookie Clayton Tune for the vacancy.
It has also been reported that for their part, the Browns have also decided pull quarterback Kellen Mond off the waivers (h/t Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com) and he is now expected to slot in on Cleveland’s QB depth chart behind Deshaun Watson and Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
Kyler Murray Has No Return Timetable
Kyler Murray suffered a season-ending injury in December of last year and as of yet, there is no clear timetable for his return. According to reports, the 26-year-old is not expected to be ready for Week 1. This recent move by the Cardinals suggest that Murray’s absence could extend well into the 2023 campaign.
In fact, league insider Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network recently reported that Murray could actually miss half of the season because of this injury:
“My understanding is he is going to take his time and make sure this thing is 100 percent right,” Rapoport reported (h/t Jeremy Bergman of NFL.com). “He is young. He’s got a long career. He’s not going to rush, so do not be surprised if we don’t see him to start the season or maybe even by the midway point. This injury has to heal perfectly.”
Don’t be surprised if Joshua Dobbs ends up getting the nod to start for the Cardinals when they battle the Washington Commanders in Week 1.
