With NFL quarterback salaries on the rapid rise in recent years, some owners around the league are discussing different ways to input a separate cap for the position. With Detroit Lions‘ Jared Goff and Jacksonville Jaguars‘ Trevor Lawrence becoming the most recently paid quarterbacks this offseason, it’s clear that teams around the league are paying top dollar to secure their field generals for the long term.
NFL Quarterback Salary Discussions

On “The Rich Eisen Show” this week, NFL analyst Tom Pelissero noticed that some owners are having quiet discussions about potentially creating a separate salary cap for the quarterback position.
There certainly has been discussions within the league among certain owners about even the idea of a quarterback cap, that at some point you want quarterback numbers to not go over a certain percentage of your salary cap.
To my knowledge, that hasn’t really gained much traction, in part because so many teams have paid their quarterbacks. If you went to suddenly an NBA model where all of a sudden you have the max and the supermax and there’s really only a couple levels that guys can get paid at, it kind of changes the dynamics in terms of how you set yourself up salary cap-wise.
Owners are discussing a QB salary cap amid an escalating market, per NFL Media.

Separate Cap Unlikely For Now
These quiet discussions have gained the attraction of the NFL world, however, it is unlikely that this will happen in reality, at least in the near future. The argument against the separate salary cap is that owner could easily refuse to pay their quarterback a significant amount of money if they believe the salaries are skyrocketing.
Salary Cap Could Become Reality In The Future

However, with the quarterback salaries continuing to rise drastically with no end in sight, we could see this scenario become more and more of a popular discussion as the years go on. Do you think that the league should implement a separate salary cap for quarterbacks, and if so, when do you think would be a good time to do so?
