The Dallas Cowboys reworked Dak Prescott’s contract to get a little salary cap relief.
According to ESPN’s Field Yates earlier today the Cowboys front office reworked Dak’s contract so that a $5 million roster bonus has been converted into a signing bonus to cutdown the 2024 cap hit by $4 million, to just over $55 million. Not exactly that big of news or that big of a reduction, but it is a step in the right direction.
The fact is the Cowboys have not many any big moves so far in free agency (and they typically don’t). According to Schuyler Dixon of NBC Dallas Fort Worth you have to go back over a decade to find see when the Cowboys last spent big for a free agent. That was for Brandon Carr and they didn’t really see a big time return on the $50 million, five-year investment either.
That being said, Cowboy fans can take some solace that Jerry Jones and company are trying to extend Dak’s contract and get more cap relief. According to a source for ESPN’s Ed Werder the Cowboys are continuing attempts to sign Prescott to a contract extension.
The latest reworking of Dak’s contract does have a bt of a downside as well. The revised contract includes adding two more voidable years in 2027 and 2028, which pushed Prescott’s salary cap number in 2025 up slightly to $40 million. The hits just keep on coming!
Then there’s All-Pro receiver CeeDee Lamb and pass-rusher extraordinaire Micah Parsons who are due to get there bags. Therefore, committing to Prescott beyond this year would make getting deals done with Lamb and Parsons a whole lot easier.
The Cowboys did add veteran linebacker Eric Kendricks on a one-year deal worth up to $3.5 million. Yet they released linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, their 2018 first-round pick, who also just announced his retirement due recurring neck concerns.
In the coming days and weeks Dallas can create more salary cap help with an extension for Prescott, who after that wild-card debacle at home to Green Bay saw his playoff record drop to 2-5. Cowboys fans everywhere hope to you know where that happens. That way Dallas can get some much need support around their star QB and see that post-season record improve.
