NFL free agency has seen many players moving around. One of the busiest men this week will be former Los Angeles Chargers wideout Mike Williams. He has at least 3 reported meetings set up with NFL teams. According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter:
“Former Chargers’ WR Mike Williams is scheduled to visit this week with the Jets, Panthers and Steelers, per source.”
NFL Wideout Mike Williams Set For a Busy Week
The New York Jets jump off that quote as he would be another weapon for Aaron Rodgers, pairing him with Garett Wilson. That would be quite helpful for Rodgers in a come back season from an Achilles injury. Williams would also be a great replacement in Pittsburgh for Dionte Johnson. Russell Wilson would love to add another weapon to get his career back on track.
Schefter also added an interesting part at the end saying:
“Also, with the Chargers having traded WR Keenan Allen, they also are interested in bringing back Williams.”
The Los Angeles Chargers lost their top receiver Keenan Allen and they very well may want to keep Williams as their wide receiver is quite empty. Two seasons ago, the team gave Williams a three-year $60 million extension. They cut him to free up $20 million of cap space, but they very well may want to resign him to a more team friendly deal.
The New York Jets Should Sign Mike Williams
Williams has recently not been as productive as early in his career, and that is mostly due to injuries and lack of seeing the field. In the previous season he only appeared in a few games having just 19 catches on the year to go with 249 yards. While he has had a few down years, he has proven that he can be an elite talent in the NFL.
He may have to sign a “prove it” contract for his next deal, but if he can just see the field for 16 games he should have incredible numbers and be able to resign a much bigger deal again. Injuries have been the big question for Williams, as when he plays healthy he is incredibly productive. Injuries have been an issue since his days at Clemson.
It would be fitting for Williams to sign with the Jets to a one year deal. If there is any quarterback that can take your worth up it’s Aaron Rodgers. If he is going to sign a smaller deal, his best option at quarterback is in New York and it is not even close.
