In recent seasons of the NFL there has been some movement from franchises relocating to new cities for their organization. While the Chiefs are synonymous with Kansas City and it feels impossible to see them playing anywhere else, there is a real chance that the team will relocate in the near future. Now the Mayor of Dallas wants the Chiefs ownership and front office to consider bringing the team to Texas where they actually got their start.
Mayor Of Dallas Wants The Chiefs To Move To Texas
The Chiefs team was created in 1960 and made its start as the Dallas Texans in the AFL. They moves to Kansas City in 1963, and now the Mayor of Dallas, Eric Johnson, thinks it’s time for the team to make a comeback to Texas.
“Welcome home, Dallas Texans!,” mayor Eric Johnson said on social media.
In addition, Johnson also said that the Chiefs could most certainly play in the Cotton Bowl.
“Dallas was named the top sports city in the United States because we play to win,” Johnson told the Dallas Morning News on Wednesday.
“As I have said previously, our market is big enough, growing enough, and loves football more than enough to support a second NFL team — especially a franchise with deep roots here.”
Chiefs Ownership Is Considering Relocation After Failed Vote
This all comes after a crucial vote that took place on April 2nd that did not go in favor of the Chiefs ownership. Per Jordan Sigler of Gridiron Heroics:
On Tuesday, the citizens of Jackson County voted against a tax referendum the Kansas City Chiefs wanted to fund upgrades at Arrowhead Stadium. The vote wasn’t as close as many reporters in the local area believed it would be.
Now that the vote failed, all the threats that Clark Hunt made about really thinking about relocation may come to fruition. We will see if they were bluffing to actually relocate just for the vote, or if they will actually now consider to make a move out of Kansas City.
