Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman made an appearance on the Dallas-based sports radio show, 105.3 The Fan, prior to the Cowboys’ Monday Night Football game this week. The main topics of discussion centered around the Cowboys and their troubles this season. In the midst of the conversation, Troy Aikman revealed to the radio crew who his favorite player is. He explained how you just don’t see players like this particular quarterback; the player to whom he extended this compliment was Joe Burrow.
Receiving this high of praise from a quarterback as decorated as Troy Aikman truly speaks to how talented Joe Burrow is. Throughout his career, Aikman won three Super Bowls, throwing for over 200 yards in each game; his performance in 1993 earned him the honor of Super Bowl MVP. He also logged six consecutive Pro Bowl appearances from ’92 to ’97. Pairing that with the many franchise records he set with the Cowboys, it is safe to say that Troy Aikman’s opinions regarding the quarterback position are respected. It would be hard to argue against the stats that Burrow has recorded this season anyway.
Troy Aikman’s QB1
Joe Burrow has had an amazing year individually. Aside from a mediocre record, he is putting up better numbers than any other quarterback in the league. Burrow currently leads the NFL in multiple offensive categories, including both passing yards and touchdowns. The Bengals’ record does not accurately reflect how their QB has performed this year; he has thrown for over 250 yards in 9 out of 14 games this season and holds the third-highest QBR in the league. Unfortunately, these MVP-type numbers don’t mean much since Cincinnati might not even make the playoffs.
Cincy’s Future
The Bengals managed to grab a win in a sloppy game against the Titans yesterday, a game in which Joe Burrow broke his own franchise record for touchdowns in a season with 36. Although fans love to see their Bengals win, the odds of them making the playoffs this year are still extremely low. The only hope they have is to win the remainder of their games and for a few teams to lose in these last couple of weeks. It is possible, yet very unlikely, that things will work out in their favor. Much crazier things have happened in this league, so it will be interesting to see how things play out in the NFL’s final weeks.
