Jimmy Garoppolo had two years playing alongside Trey Lance with the San Francisco 49ers. The young QB was actually Jimmy G’s protege in San Francisco before Garoppolo was shown the door this summer. It didn’t take long before Lance also made his way out of the team via a high-profile trade to the Dallas Cowboys just a few days ago.
Jimmy Garoppolo Speaks Out on ‘Weird’ Trey Lance Situation With 49ers
In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Garoppolo was asked to share his thoughts on the Niners trading Lance to the Cowboys after the former No. 3 overall pick fell in the pecking order as the third-string quarterback behind Brock Purdy and newcomer Sam Darnold.
Jimmy G got brutally honest in his response:
“Uh, you know, weird situation,” Garoppolo said (h/t Gabe Fernandez of SF Gate). “Been a lot of weird situations over there in San Francisco, just to leave it at that, but I’m happy Trey got another shot, man. Happy he’s getting to Dallas, gets another opportunity. Hopefully things work out there, but it’s a weird league. Everyone has a different story of how they get to places, myself included in that. It’s never a straight line. There’s always going to be bumps in the road, some things that you’ve got to overcome.
“I think Trey’s made of the right stuff. He’s a good dude, love that guy, he’s a brother to me so I’m always pulling for him.”
Did Garoppolo just throw some shade in the direction of the 49ers by saying that there are “a lot of weird situations” in San Francisco? You could say that Jimmy G’s own situation with the Niners became a little bit “weird” as well, especially toward the end of his tenure with the team. The two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback was on the receiving end of a lot of criticism during his time in San Francisco, which ultimately ended after he was usurped by Brock Purdy as the team’s QB1 and the organization’s new cornerstone quarterback for the future.
That’s all water under the bridge now, though, and Garoppolo will now get a fresh start with the Raiders. Ironically, Trey Lance is in the exact same situation right now after both quarterbacks were pretty much forced out of San Francisco at virtually the same time. Some folks might indeed find that “weird.”
