At the end of last season, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the team would be going “All In” for this upcoming year. They have seemed to do just the opposite, with letting many of their elite players go, and not really bringing in any real talent in free agency.
Now there have been talks that the team may draft a quarterback in the first round as the contract talks with Dak Prescott are getting worse and worse. Jerry Jones revealed his opinions of his star quarterback to the media on Wednesday ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Jerry Jones Hopes To Keep Dak Prescott On The Dallas Cowboys
As the Draft is just a day away, many analysts have predicted that the Cowboys may use their first round pick on a quarterback to replace Dak Prescott. Jerry Jones however, chimed in and said that is not going to happen.
While both sides have been having trouble to give Prescott a long term deal, Jones made it crystal clear that he wants Dak as his quarterback. Jones said that Dak is wanted in Dallas even though he is heading in to the final year of his contract.
“We want Dak Prescott,” Jones said, via Jon Machota of TheAthletic.com. “That’s that. . . . I give Mike [McCarthy] a lot of credit for [Prescott’s improvement last season]. That improvement demonstrated to me there’s more as far as ultimately winning what we’re trying to do here. The question nails it for me.
Jerry Jones Wants Dak Prescott, But Can He Keep Him?
Jones continued a very long tangent about how much he loves Dak and will work very hard to keep in Dallas:
“We want Dak. We think that there’s room for growth. … If you are a team that has a lot of cap room, and then you have a quarterback for a little while that is well underneath in his rookie contract — San Francisco last year, us with Dak early after we had [Tony] Romo — boy, we had a lot of credit card use there on Romo. Dak came along, so we didn’t have to have it so we were able to absorb that money and still keep Tyron [Smith] around him. So Dak has enjoyed, in his career that we’re proud of, some of the best supporting casts that you could put around him.
At the same time however, it is very strange with all that talk that there is still not a deal done going into Dak’s final season under contract. Jones did address the fact that the Cowboys are facing an issue with being able to keep CeeDee Lamb, Micah Parsons, and Prescott.
While Jones was not overly optimistic that they will be able to sign every one of their top guys, he does believ the team can get a deal done with Dak.
“Dak as the quarterback Cowboys, I don’t even have a blink on that one,” he said plainly.
The Cowboys sit with the No. 24 pick in the first round, and it will be very interesting to see who they take with that pick. Dallas has drafted very well over the last decade.
