The 2023 NFL Draft has come and gone in a blink of an eye. According to Sports Analyst Peter Schrager, some NFL General Managers are annoyed by the praise Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman received for the Eagle’s draft.

NFL General Managers believe Roseman is receiving too much credit. The news is significant because of how the Eagles organization is perceived.
Pro Football Focus gave the Eagles an A-plus grade for their draft. Multiple sports analysts believe the Eagles won the draft. The Eagles were showered with praise and are still receiving praise.
Roseman won NFL Executive of the Year in 2022. Roseman organized a team that went to the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, the Eagles lost 38-35.
Roseman won NFL Executive of the Year in 2017 and the Eagles won the Super Bowl. The Eagles beat the Patriots 41-33.
Roseman also received admiration for the Eagle’s offseason. Roseman resigned Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, James Bradberry and Darius Slay. Jalen Hurts signed a five-year $255 million contract with $179.304 million guaranteed. Hurt’s contract made him the highest-paid player in NFL history.
Howie Roseman Background
Roseman has been a football savant since he was a teenager. At 13 years old Roseman knew he wanted to be a General Manager in the NFL. Roseman attended the University of Florida and the Fordham University School of Law. Roseman received his master’s degree in Law.
Roseman was an unpaid intern for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2000. Roseman took over as General Manager in 2010 and was the youngest General Manager in NFL history. Roseman assumed the role at 39 years old. Roseman’s second stint as General Manager came in 2019.
Roseman acquired veterans before the 2022 season. Roseman helped Quarterback Jalen Hurts by trading for star Wide Receiver A.J. Brown.
The Eagles Common Denominator
Philadelphia’s 2022 season mirrored its 2017 season. In 2017 the Eagle’s offense scored 28.6 points per game and averaged 365.8 yards per game. Defensively, the Eagles allowed 18.4 points per game and allowed 306.5 yards per game. These statistics were provided by the Football Database.
In 2022, the Eagle’s offense scored 28.1 points per game and 389.1 yards per game. On defense, the Eagles allowed 20.2 points per game and 301.5 yards per game.
The 2017 and 2022 seasons were identical for the Eagles. The offense was clicking all season and the defense was stingy. Philadelphia beat teams at the line of scrimmage. Roseman created strong rosters capable of winning a Super Bowl. Philly had strong seasons with Doug Pederson, Carson Wentz, Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts.
The Failures
Despite the success Roseman has had there have been failures. Roseman signed Carson Wentz to a four-year deal worth $128 million. Wentz received $107 million at signing. After signing the deal Wentz struggled to produce. Wentz dealt with injuries and couldn’t find his 2017 form. Wentz was eventually traded to the Colts in 2021.
Roseman’s team experienced average seasons in 2018 and 2019. The Eagles finished 9-7 in both seasons and didn’t make it back to the Super Bowl. In 2020, the Eagles finished 4-11-1 their worst mark since the 2012 season. Roseman’s team didn’t win more than ten games until 2022.
Since the 2017 season, Roseman’s team is 58-39-1.
Final Note
Howie Roseman has done a great job in Philadelphia. A draft class shouldn’t be judged until years after. If the Eagle’s recent draft picks have productive careers the praise is justified.
