The 2024 NFL Draft is just over a week away, and one NFL insider thinks that the first round will make history. The league has been trending in the offensive direction for years now, and now Adam Schefter thinks that this years draft will highlight that in a historic way.
Adam Schefter Believes 2024 NFL Draft Will Go Offense
NFL and ESPN’s Adam Schefter thinks that this years draft will feature the most offensive players selected in the history of the NFL in the first round. In the history of the draft, there have been 19 offensive players selected in the first round on three occasions, with the most recent being in 2009.
The league has been trending in the offensive direction for many years now, with rule changes benefitting offenses, and most of the head coaches around the league being offensive minded.
Now, Schefter thinks that over 19 players that are selected in the first round will be offensive players. At the top of the draft, around 7 or 8 of the top 10 draft picks are predicted to be offensive players. There should be at least four quarterbacks that should go in the top ten, and the top five picks may be all offensive players.
Is NFL Defense Done As We Know It
There have also been significant rule changes in recent years, and this year the league banned the hip-drop tackle. That had many defensive players in the NFL and the Hall Of Fame commenting on how the league is taking away defense from the game.
It is clear that the league has changed from a defensive to an offensive league, but the change is much more serious than fans believe. The league has become all about scoring as many points as possible and defenders are being thrown out the window.
While offense is exciting for many fans, and there should be amazing new offensive talent coming in this years draft, It can get to a point where it takes away from the game.
Defenses no longer win championships, and while offense is what sells now, it may not in the near future.
