The Miami Dolphins, who ended their season on a rough note losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Wildcard round are looking to reach the top of the AFC for the first time since Head Coach Mike McDaniel’s arrival. Miami finished with an 11-6 record during the regular season, but lost 4 of their last 6 games and dealt with multiple season-ending injuries on defense.
While the offense is loaded with talent and put up the 3rd most points per game amongst the NFL in 2023, one former general manager believes that they should balance things out on both sides of the ball.
Former NFL GM Mike Tannebaum Says Dolphins Should Trade Jaylen Waddle for CB Trent McDuffie

In a segment of ESPN’s show “Get Up”, former NFL General Manager Mike Tannebaum proposed a trade between Miami and Kansas City which would deal Jaylen Waddle in exchange for All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie.
“I love this one,” Tannebaum said”. “Two great young players. Trent McDuffie straight up for Jaylen Waddle, here’s why. If you’re Miami, you’re probably going to cut Xavien Howard as a cap casualty… You still have a great receiver in Tyreek Hill. For Kansas City, you need a number one receiver. Waddle really has a chance to be a number one. The other neat thing about this trade is it’s really like the second half of the Tyreek Hill trade, which you could argue was also a win/win.”
Miami will have a decision to make in the next couple seasons whether to pay Waddle top dollar or deal him to the highest bidder. They will also have to decide whether to pick up his 5th-year option by May of this year. While he was secondary to Tyreek Hill for most of the 2023 season, Waddle is considered as one of the best young receivers in the league today.
Would Waddle for McDuffie Make Sense for Both Teams?

Assuming they protect their salary cap and cut Xavien Howard, this trade would make sense for Miami. It is easier to replace a compliment to Tyreek Hill than it is to find a shutdown cornerback like McDuffie. Rated as the fourth best cornerback by Pro Football Focus, McDuffie would serve with Jalen Ramsey as one of the top duos in the NFL if this trade happened.
While this trade would be beneficial for Miami, Kansas City would likely ask for more than a straight up trade. The Chiefs proved they can win a Super Bowl without trading for a superstar pass catcher due to the emergence of Rashee Rice and having one of the greatest tight ends of all time in Travis Kelce. With McDuffie reaching All-Pro status this season and 3 years left on his rookie deal, Kansas City keeping him around holds more value.
