The Dallas Cowboys took a flyer on Trey Lance the former third overall pick. For Lance, it was an opportunity to step out of the spotlight as he likely would not be called upon to play this season. For the Cowboys, Lance provides some upside in case the team decides it is time to move on from Dak Prescott. Lance recently opened up about his time in Dallas so far.
Dallas Cowboys Trey Lance
“It’s been good for me to get a new look and a fresh start. It’s a breath of fresh air here,” Lance said via the team’s official website. After all of the drama in San Francisco, Lance is excited to be somewhere different. Head coach Mike McCarthy is liking what he is seeing so far.
“He’s doing well. I’m glad he’s here, that’s for sure. He’s a great addition. He does everything. He’s part of the quarterback school, he’s putting in the extra hours. He’s doing everything he’s supposed to be doing.”
This is exactly what you want to hear if you are a Cowboys fan. Prescott seems to have hit his ceiling and is not getting any younger. If the team can coach up Lance, they could have a really nice succession plan that they didn’t have to spend big money on.
A Very Risky Move
While Prescott has his flaws, there is no denying that he has been a productive quarterback for the Cowboys. If the team is going to move on and go to Lance, they have to be absolutely sure that Lance will at least not be a drop in production. The production may look different but the Cowboys have a roster that is built to win now. I understand the frustration with Prescott but the grass is not always greener. The hope is that Lance can develop as he is not the lead story in every newspaper like he was in San Francisco.
The Dallas Cowboys made the right move taking a flyer on Trey Lance. A fourth-round pick is nothing and if it works out, the franchise has set themselves up for success for many years to come.
