Trey Lance’s career to a massive turn on Wednesday after it was revealed that the San Francisco 49ers had decided to assign him as the team’s QB3 behind Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold. We all know that Purdy had the starting quarterback slot locked down, but it comes as a considerable surprise that Darnold, who signed with the Niners this summer, has now surpassed Lance in the pecking order.
Kyle Shanahan Says He Gave Trey Lance Day Off
After news broke of his sudden demotion, Trey Lance was notably absent from practice on Wednesday. This led to all sorts of rumblings surrounding the 23-year-old’s long-term future with the squad. From being San Francisco’s future cornerstone quarterback a couple of years ago, Lance’s role has all of a sudden fallen to a third-string QB with an uncertain future ahead of him.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has tried his best to play down all the drama. The San Francisco shot-caller had nothing but praise for his young QB. Shanahan even said that he would like for Lance to remain with the team despite this recent development. However, the Niners coach also said that the team will “do right for Trey.”
About his absence from practice, though, Shanahan admitted that it was his decision to send Lance home after speaking with the quarterback earlier in the day:
“We had such a light practice today, watching how Trey was when we talked, we thought it was better to ‘Hey, take the day off, clear your head some, we’ll talk later in the afternoon and get you back in there tomorrow,'” Shanahan said, via KNBR on Twitter.
Trey Lance must have been devastated.
Kyle Shanahan did say that he gave Lance “the day off,” which probably means that the former North Dakota State standout should be back in practice on Thursday. If he’s not, though, then this becomes a different conversation altogether.
