REPORT: Denver Broncos Trade Promising TE to Philadelphia Eagles

It was reported earlier on Tuesday that the Denver Broncos had come to a decision to cut ties with Albert Okwuegbunam. As it turns out, however, the Philadelphia Eagles really wanted the promising tight end on their roster and were unwilling to risk having to secure him off the waiver wire.

REPORT: Broncos Trade Albert Okwuegbunam to Eagles for Sixth-Round Pick

League insider Adam Schefter of the NFL Network reports that the Broncos and the Eagles have struck a deal for Albert Okwuegbunam:

“Another trade: Broncos traded TE Albert Okwuegbunam and a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Eagles for a 2025 sixth-round pick, per sources,” Shefter wrote in his tweet.

That’s virtually a pick swap for the two teams, with the Broncos moving up one round in the 2025 NFL Draft. This move should be considered a win for Denver given how they were about to cut Okwuegbunam anyway.

The Broncos, on the other hand, acquire the services of a young TE that still has a lot of potential in him. Okwuegbunam, who was Denver’s fourth-round pick in 2020, missed his rookie campaign due to an ACL injury. He showed flashes of brilliance the following season, though, and he showed relatively significant progress in 2022. Moreover, the former Missouri standout also had an eye-opening preseason run this summer, which made more than a few folks believe that he was going to make the roster cut ahead of the new season.

Well, this just wasn’t going to be the case for the 25-year-old. Okwuegbunam was deemed surplus to requirements in Denver with Adam Trautman, Greg Dulcich, Chris Manhertz, and even Nate Adkins ahead of him in the pecking order at tight end.

Okwuegbunam will get a fresh start in Philly and the Eagles are hoping that the change in scenery will allow the 6-foot-5, 258-pound TE to reach his full potential.
