Ever since Bill Belichick missed out on the Atlanta Falcons head coaching job, there have been reports that owner Arthur Blank and Co. didn’t push through hiring him because he wanted complete control of the NFL franchise like what he had with the New England Patriots.
Now, that conspiracy theory has been dismissed once again, this time by two-time Super Bowl winner and Hall of Fame coach Jimmy Johnson.
Jimmy Johnson Fires Back at False Bill Belichick Narrative
Speaking on Miami’s WQAM 560 AM, Johnson shared his recent conversation with Belichick and relayed what the legendary head coach told him about his failed coaching search this 2024 offseason.
According to Johnson, Belichick never asked for total control during his search, adding that what happened with the Patriots was something that he did not actually push for. Belichick also shared his openness to let the general manager and other front office execs to handle personnel decisions.
“Bill is upfront about it. He said, ‘Hey, I don’t need to be in charge of everything.’ That’s what happened up in New England. He kind of fell into that deal, and it’s not necessarily that he pushed for it,” Johnson explained, via CBS Sports.
“That’s what happened because he was there for so long. But he’s more than willing to give up some of the personnel decisions to the general manager and the personnel people.”
For what it’s worth, Arthur Blank himself refuted those talks that Belichick asked for complete autonomy during their conversations before the Falcons handed the head coaching vacancy to Raheem Morris. Similar to what Johnson said, Blank emphasized that what is circulating in media circles is absolutely “not true.”
Sure enough, it’s time to put the rumors to rest.
What’s Next for Bill Belichick in the NFL?
With Bill Belichick failing to find a head coaching job in 2024, he is now expected to take a year off and try again in 2025 when there are more possible head coaching openings.
For what it’s worth, Belichick has already been linked to a number of potential jobs. For one, the Dallas Cowboys are said to likely have an interest in him, especially if Mike McCarthy struggles or fails to lead America’s Team to the Super Bowl once again.
Recently, FOX Sports host Rob Parker even suggested that the San Francisco 49ers should fire Kyle Shanahan and hire Belichick instead after the team’s failure to beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 58.
Belichick still has plenty of supporters like Jimmy Johnson, and by the looks of it, more opportunities should come his way. He just needs to be patient.
