The NFL has certainly offered a lot of storylines this past week. In the middle of playoff football, there were several major coaching moves by eliminated teams. One of which involved former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
Last week, he and Patriots owner Robert Kraft announced that they were mutually parting ways after 24 seasons. Considering Belichick’s age, it has left many wondering if he was going to retire or coach another team. Now, one NFL analyst believes that an unexpected reunion could happen for Belichick.
Boomer Esiason Hints at New York Giants Reunion
Earlier this morning, NFL analyst Boomer Esiason discussed Bill Belichick on his “Boomer and Gio” morning show on WFAN. During the show, he hinted that we should not count the New York Giants out as a team that could land Bill Belichick. Here is what Esiason had to say about it:
“This is all coming at a weird time. He (Belichick) wants to coach… loves the Giants…”
-Boomer Esiason
Boomer’s co-host, Greg Giannotti, pushed back on this idea. Gianotti followed that up claiming that if the Giants were to hire Bill Belichick, they would have to get rid of GM Joe Schoen along with current head coach Brian Daboll.
The show’s executive producer, Al Dukes, also chimed in on this subject. Dukes and Esiason have worked together on this radio show for 16 years. He followed up Giannotti’s comments by claiming that Esiason knows something that he was not telling them:
“Sometimes you drop things like you know something.” -Al Dukes
Boomer Esiason seemed to be nervous at the pushback he was getting from this conversation. He gulped after this comment was made and replied multiple times with “I’m just having a conversation.”
Is Boomer Esiason Onto Something?
Esiason certainly has connections in the NFL. He was a quarterback in the league for 14 years, three of which he spent with the New York Jets. Besides hosting the above radio show for more than 16 years, he is also an NFL analyst on “The NFL Today” on CBS. In other words, Esiason may have sources that could provide some credibility to these hints he was dropping on his show.
Bill Belichick’s Giants History
There is no question that Belichick has a soft spot for the New York Giants. One can argue he owes a lot of where he is today to that organization. After bouncing around the NFL for four seasons, Belichick landed with the Giants in 1979.
Back then, the Giants were not exactly good. However, as a member of legendary coach Bill Parcells’ coaching staff, Belichick flourished. He remained with the Giants for 12 seasons and captured two Super Bowl titles before getting his first head coaching job in 1991 with the Cleveland Browns.
New York Giants Coach Drama
It is no secret that current head coach Brian Daboll and former defensive coordinator Wink Martindale had issues this season. As a result, the latter ended up parting ways with the organization. However, this is not the end of it.
A bombshell report from Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News revealed that there were extensive problems with the coaching staff dynamics. The article also discussed GM Joe Schoen listening to headsets during games after Daboll’s comments to Martindale got more explosive. As a result, it leaves the franchise in an awkward position.
The Giants finished 6-11 this season and hold the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, the players have shown they are willing to compete even in the worst circumstances. Despite the reported drama, New York still managed to beat two playoff teams after starting the season 2-8. Now, they need to figure out the best way to move forward.
