The NFL offseason is upon us, with league news starting to slow down. However, there is almost always something notable on the table. Earlier this morning, the NFL announced that they were adding two new members to its Competition Committee. These two members also happen to be two of the most recognizable head coaches in the NFL. Read below to find out more.
Sean McDermott and Sean McVay Added
According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, the NFL is adding two current head coaches to its Competition Committee. These two coaches are Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott and Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay. Both have been head coaches of their respective teams since 2017 and have had some playoff success. McVay won a Super Bowl during his tenure.
Joining Six Other Current Members
McVay and McDermott join six other current members of the Competition Committee. So, who are these other members? Take a look at the list below:
- Rich McKay (Chairman), Atlanta Falcons
- Katie Blackburn, Cincinnati Bengals
- Chris Grier, Miami Dolphins
- John Mara, New York Giants
- Stephen Jones, Dallas Cowboys
- Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers
Issues to Address
There are a couple of notable issues the Competition Committee may have to address this offseason. One current rule garnering a lot of discussion is what happens when a player fumbles a football into the endzone. Right now, the rule is there is a change of possession, and the other team gets it at the 20-yard line.
However, many people are calling for this rule to be changed. We saw this rule make a big impact on a large stage in the AFC Championship when Baltimore Ravens WR Zay Flowers fumbled the football at the Chiefs’ 1-yard line. The current rule essentially sealed the Ravens’ fate in that game.
Another issue garnering a lot of attention is fines for certain hits players make. This has been called out and criticized. Now, we will have to see if McVay and McDermott help address the above issues and more.
