The New York Jets will run it back in 2024, hoping that future Hall of Fame quarterback and team captain Aaron Rodgers can stay healthier for longer than four snaps. New York entered last season with massive expectations, but the season came crashing down around them when Rodgers suffered a brutal season-ending Achilles injury in the season opener. After Rodgers’ injury, the Jets turned to backup quarterback and former first-round pick Zach Wilson. However, the results were middling, with the AFC East club finishing under .500 while using four separate signal-callers in a lost season.
The Jets strategically decided to bench Wilson midway in the season, only to reinstate him in a Week 13 victory over the Houston Texans. However, it was reported that it took a collective effort, including a talk from Rodgers, to convince Wilson to reclaim the starting quarterback position, as the BYU product had grown frustrated with the organization after his benching. It appears that Wilson is still harboring some resentment towards the Jets. According to NFL insider Ari Meirov, New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas has confirmed Wilson’s absence at voluntary workouts, yet they still see his potential as a valuable asset.
New York Jets QB Zach Wilson: Not Accounted for at Voluntary Workouts
According to their general manager, Joe Douglas, New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson is not at voluntary workouts. In late February, Douglas confirmed that he gave Wilson and his agent, Brian Ayrault, permission to seek a trade this offseason. Wilson grew disgruntled with the Jets this past season after a midseason benching. However, the former top NFL prospect refuted those reports, saying there was no truth behind any reluctance to start for the Jets again during the later portion of the 2023 season.

While it’s unfortunate that Wilson is not present at the team’s voluntary workouts, it’s important to remember that these are voluntary. Wilson started 11 games last season, completing 60.1% of his passes for 2,271 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He has posted average numbers across his three seasons with the club, throwing just 23 touchdowns against 25 interceptions in 33 starts. However, he showcased his potential in one of his best games as a professional late in 2023, going 27-of-36 for 301 yards and two touchdowns in a blowout win.
New York Jets: Current State of QB Room
Four-time MVP and future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers remains atop the quarterback depth chart when healthy. The ten-time Pro Bowler played just four snaps last season but threw 26 touchdowns against 12 picks in 2022 as a member of the Green Bay Packers. Meanwhile, if Wilson remains in New York, the backup position should be his to win.
The Jets also signed former New York Giants signal-caller Tyrod Taylor this offseason. The 13-year NFL veteran has started 58 games in his professional career. He has done well, throwing 65 touchdowns against 29 interceptions. He started five games for the Giants last season.
