The New York Jets designated left tackle Duane Brown for return from the injured reserve. Duane has 21 days to practice before New York activates him from the injured reserve. If he doesn’t practice in those three weeks, he will miss the remainder of the season.
The New York Jets signed Brown to a multi-year contract in 2022
New York signed Duane Brown to a 2-year, $22 million contract after Mekhi Becton suffered a season-ending avulsion fracture in his right kneecap during training camp.
Brown injured his shoulder during practice, and New York placed him on the injured reserve to start the 2022 season. New York activated him from the injured reserve ahead of Week 5. Brown started at left tackle for the next 12 games, battling a torn rotator cuff. New York shut down Brown for the season finale and placed him on the injured reserve.
Brown finished the season with a 57.8 PFF grade, six penalties, and one sack allowed in 744 snaps.
Brown decided not to retire from the NFL and got shoulder surgery to repair his torn rotator cuff during the offseason. New York placed him on the Active/PUP List on July 22, 2023. Brown passed his physical, and New York activated him from the PUP List just in time for the regular season.
Brown started in the first two games of the season, serving as the blind side blocker to Aaron Rodgers and Zach Wilson.
He suffered a hip injury in Week 2
Brown suffered a hip injury in the Jets’ 10-30 loss to the Cowboys in Week 2. New York placed Brown on the injured reserve. Brown has missed the last five games.
Who filled in for Brown at tackle?
The Jets moved Mekhi Becton from right tackle to left and Alijah Vera-Tucker from right guard to right tackle.
Alijah Vera-Tucker suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in the Jets’ 31-21 victory over the Broncos in Week 5. The Jets then inserted Max Mitchell to replace Vera-Tucker for the last two games at right tackle.
What will New York do with their offensive line moving forward?
Once Duane Brown practices, New York can activate him off the injured reserve. When he gets activated, he will likely be the starting left tackle. Mekhi Becton likely switches back to the right side. Designating Brown for return from the injured reserve is good news for the injury-depleted Jets offensive line.
Brown wasn’t the only lineman to go down with an injury. As mentioned, Alijah Vera-Tucker is out for the season with a ruptured Achilles, Connor McGovern was placed on the injured reserve with a dislocated knee cap, Wes Schweitzer was placed on the injured reserve with a calf injury, and Joe Tippmann missed Week 8 week with a thigh injury.
If they want Aaron Rodgers to play this season, the Jets’ offensive line has to stay healthy.
