With Aaron Rodgers set to return to the field from his injury in 2024, there’s really just a few thing the New York Jets need do to help him: Surround him with a good offensive line and more weapons he can use to work his magic.
Rodgers is a Super Bowl winner and a four-time NFL MVP, so he knows what to do when you give him the right tools. While the New York faithful were denied of watching his greatness after an Achilles tear ended his season in Week 1 of the 2023 season, the next campaign is bound to be different.
Having said that, the Jets need to make sure that he has everything he needs to make the team a success. And with the team out of playoff contention already, they can turn their focus now on what they can do in the offseason to improve.
According to a recent Bleacher Report article suggesting free agency and other offseason additions for all NFL teams, the Jets could target Buffalo Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis to give them a more consistent scoring threat.
While Garrett Wilson has proven himself to be a capable first option as wide receiver, Allen Lazard hasn’t really lived up to the expectations on him. Perhaps Lazard himself didn’t expect that it would be Zach Wilson throwing the football at him for most of the season, but regardless, the Jets must make sure they have the right people for the job.
If Lazard proves to be inconsistent once again in 2024, they need to be ready to have a better option aside from him. That’s where Davis comes in.
While Davis’ name isn’t often mentioned among the top wideouts in the league, he delivers when his number is called. That is proven by the seven touchdowns he has made for the Bills on 43 receptions.
“Gabe Davis might not be among the league’s best No. 2 receivers, but he’s a consistent red-zone threat with at least six touchdowns in every season he’s played. The 6’2″, 225-pounder can go up and get 50-50 balls and is used to playing second fiddle to an elite receiver like Wilson,” the Bleacher Report article stated.
If the New York Jets want someone who can finish and score, then Gabe Davis could be their guy. Sure enough, Aaron Rodgers would love to have another capable weapon by his side as he looks to end the franchise’s record-breaking 13-year postseason drought.
Will the New York Jets Be Able To Make a Play for Gabe Davis?
Now before New York Jets fans dream of having Gabe Davis alongside Garrett Wilson, with Aaron Rodgers throwing the ball to them, it’s worth noting that it might be difficult for the team to acquire his signature.
While the Buffalo Bills can’t afford to pay Davis, Stefon Diggs’ situation could make things different. As everyone knows, Diggs has found himself in trade rumors multiple times. If Diggs ends up asking for a way out of Buffalo, then the team could prioritize keeping Davis.
As mentioned as well, Davis won’t come cheap. PFF even projects him to get a contract in the $12 million range for one year. If the New York Jets want Davis, they might need to overpay for his services. With that said, they have to assess their other needs and if it would make sense financially to sign the 24-year-old wideout.
