The New York Jets inked All-Pro offensive tackle Tyron Smith to a free-agent mega-deal, to protect Aaron Rodgers, and now could be on the cusp of adding a potentially game-altering weapon in the passing game to help him.
Few prospects are rising up NFL Draft boards quicker, according to conversations with multiple sources across the league, than Georgia tight end Brock Bowers.
New York jets could Target Brock Bowers
According to Bleacher Report’s Brett Sobleski, who went through and listed Bowers’ best destinations, the New York Jets are the second-best fit for the Georgia tight end.
“Unlike every other organization on this list,” Sobleski writes. “Bowers’ addition can be viewed as more of a luxury than the smart investment for Gang Green “The truth is New York still needs more help along its offensive line. Yes, the team added guard John Simpson, as well as offensive tackles Morgan Morgan and Tyron Smith. On paper, the Jets’ starting front five looks like a rock-solid group. Considering the ages of Morgan and Smith—both are 33 or older—and injury histories, specifically regarding Smith, general manager Joe Douglas would be well-advised to select an offensive tackle early as an insurance to keep the unit intact and quarterback Aaron Rodgers upright.
“The more talent the team can place among its skill positions can create an instant impact. With Breece Hall providing an explosive option running the ball, Garrett Wilson and Mike Williams working on the outside and Bowers dominating the middle of the field, Rodgers can return to form, with the Jets potentially entering the mix among the AFC’s top squads.”
Brock Bowers NFL Draft Scouting Report
It’s easy to see why the Jets would have Bowers on their radar, ahead o the draft.
Over his three seasons in Athens, Bowers caught 175 passes for 2,538 yards with 26 touchdowns, while averaging a healthy 10.2 yards per reception.
“Prolific pass-catching tight end with a rare blend of acceleration, speed, body control and hands,” NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein writes of Bowers, comparing him to All-Pro George Kittle. “That could breathe new life into a stale NFL offense.
“Bowers was a high-volume target at Georgia and led the team in receiving yards in all three of his college seasons. He plays with relentless pacing as a route runner, allowing him to beat man coverage. Also, he’s highly effective at exploiting zone pockets for first downs and chunk plays.”
If the Jets are looking to come away with a weapon for Rodgers early in the draft, Bowers could be a top target to watch.
