The New York Jets unsurprisingly announced today that Zach Wilson will be able to seek a trade shortly after meeting with top quarterbacks.
The New York Jets staff have been doing their due diligence as they continue to search for all possible avenues for improving the team. One of the first positions of concern for the Jets has been quarterback, as Aaron Rodgers does not have much time left, and last season proved the value of a backup. After the terrible play last season, the Jets could consider finding their future quarterback early before suffering more unfortunate issues at the position.
New York Jets Meet With Quarterbacks Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams Ahead of NFL Draft Combine
As the New York Jets have arrived in town to scout the NFL Combine, their eyes seem to be set on the goal of finding the best available player. In the past drafts under General Manager Joe Douglas, the Jets have gone for the best overall player available during their pick. This could be seen a season ago when the Jets surprisingly drafted Will McDonald out of Iowa State despite having a strong defensive line already. Douglas and Saleh both agreed McDonald was the best player available during their pick in their eyes.
Now, the Jets are doing a similar search to what they have previously done after speaking with two of the top available quarterbacks in the draft. Both Jayden Daniels and Caleb Williams have been considered to be the best players at their position, and likely will go very early in the upcoming draft. However, if they were to drop in the draft, the Jets would consider drafting either player with the tenth overall draft pick.
The Jets have other serious needs, including the offensive line and wide receiver which should be addressed first over their future quarterback. The Jets previously traded up in the draft with the Indianapolis Colts to draft quarterback Sam Darnold when the team had similar roster issues.
Without Zach Wilson, Could the Jets Consider Drafting a Quarterback During the Upcoming NFL Draft?
While taking a quarterback early may not actually be a terrible idea for the Jets, it seems highly unlikely either quarterback will be available. Along with that issue, the Jets are still committed to making the playoffs and allowing Rodgers to carry their team to the promised land. If the Jets were to draft a play-making wide receiver or an offensive lineman, that could likely bring the team much closer to their goal than a backup quarterback would.
The future is always a pleasant thing to think about however, and in similar situations in the past the New York Jets always seem to be on the wrong side of history. Whether it be drafting the wrong quarterback, or taking a quarterback when the offensive line is in shambles, the Jets have not had much luck with the position. New York could certainly consider taking a quarterback, but the team will more than likely hold off for the time being.
