New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers has made just about every headline since joining the team this season. Now, he is making headlines because of what he said about his old team. What did Rodgers say about the Green Bay Packers? Find out below.
Aaron Rodgers Still Roots for Green Bay Packers
In an interview with Pat McAfee, Rodgers discussed the current NFC North standings. In Week 16, the Detroit Lions clinched their first division title in 30 years. As a result, the Green Bay Packers can no longer win the division in 2023. Rodgers reacted to this by stating:
“Although I’m in New York, I still want the green and gold to take the North every year.”
-Aaron Rodgers
This quote emphasizes that Rodgers still has love for the team that he spent the majority of his NFL career with. That team is the Green Bay Packers. If it were up to Rodgers, he would have wanted the Packers to somehow come up with the NFC North title this season.
Green Bay Packers Playoff Hopes
Right now, the Green Bay Packers have a 7-8. This comes after barely beating the Carolina Panthers in Week 16. As a result, they are still in the playoff discussion with a big game coming up in Week 17.
That game is against the Minnesota Vikings. It will be on the road during Sunday Night Football to close out the 2023 calendar year. To realistically get in the playoffs, both teams need to win this game. The loser will likely be eliminated from the playoffs.
Why is this? Because of the competition in front of them. Right now, the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks both have 8-7 records. On top of this, the Vikings beat the Packers in their earlier meeting this season. As a result, this win is even more important for the Packers.
New York Jets Moving Forward
Because the Jets fell out of playoff contention, Aaron Rodgers was unofficially shut down for the season despite rumors that he could return. Unfortunately, Rodgers only played four snaps in the 2023 NFL season. However, New York Jets fans could have higher hopes for the 2024 season.
That is because Rodgers has shown no signs of retirement. Rodgers has stated that this year does not count as his first year with the Jets. By this logic, Rodgers wants to stay with the Jets for at least two more seasons.
In a perfect world, Aaron Rodgers makes a triumphant return to Lambeau Field in the 2024 NFL season. Can this happen? Technically, it is possible if the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers have the same division placement this season. Realistically, this means the Packers coming in third place in the NFC North.
