The Detroit Lions have done something that their franchise has not accomplished in three decades. In a tight battle today against the Minnesota Vikings, the Lions were able to come out on top by a score of 30-24. As a result, Detroit has clinched the NFC North.
Detroit Lions Win Division for First Time Since 1993
Detroit Lions fans have been waiting a long time for their team to win the division. Many fans may not have even been alive the last time it happened. Well, despite a late scare by the Minnesota Vikings, the Lions secured the win they needed to wrap up the NFC North. As a result, they will host a playoff game.
In the 1993-94 NFL playoffs, the Detroit Lions hosted the Green Bay Packers. Unfortunately, they ended up losing that game. Now, the Lions are hoping for a better result.
If you are wondering when the last time the Lions won a playoff game is, that dates back to the 1991-92 season. The Detroit Lions defeated the Dallas Cowboys by a whopping 38-6. Unfortunately, the Lions ran into a buzzsaw in the NFC Championship. They lost to the Washington Redskins that season 41-10.
Game Highlights
Jahmyr Gibbs had a notable game for the Detroit Lions. He had 80 rushing yards and two touchdowns. As for QB Jared Goff, he had 257 passing yards and a touchdown pass.
However, the Vikings did provide one late scare. With less than two minutes to go, they looked to drive down the field for the game-winning touchdown. During that drive, WR Justin Jefferson came up with an unbelievable catch on 3rd and 27. Nevertheless, the Vikings could not capitalize on it. QB Nick Mullens threw an interception when it mattered most later that drive.
Possible Playoff Opponents
Now, the Detroit Lions have an 11-4 record. At the time of writing, the 49ers have the best record in the NFC at 11-3. The Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys have 10-4 records respectively.
It is hard to say who the Lions could face in their first home playoff game in 30 years. However, what better script could there be than it be the Los Angeles Rams? If that happens, both Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford would face their former teams. Right now, the Rams have an 8-7 record and currently hold the sixth seed in the NFC.
