The New York Giants have a lot of work to do heading into the free agency period. One of the major question marks is what is going to happen with S Xavier McKinney? Well, there will be competition for his services. Read below to find out more.
Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles After McKinney
According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Giants have two main competitors for McKinney. These teams are the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers. These teams have been connected in the offseason so far.
The major news that broke earlier today involved RB Saquon Barkley reaching an agreement with the Philadelphia Eagles. After spending six years with the Giants, they now have to see their star player in their division rival’s colors. Now, the Giants are hoping this does not happen a second time with McKinney.
McKinney Drama With New York Giants
There was drama leaked between McKinney and the coaching staff last year. It was reported that McKinney would not return to the Giants if defensive coordinator Wink Martindale was still with the team. Since then, that has been resolved, as Martindale is no longer with the Giants.
Given the report cards from the NFLPA, this seems to benefit the Giants. That is because Daboll and the training staff all received good grades on the report cards from the NFLPA. In other words, the drama from above should be put to rest if this is indeed accurate.
No Tag
Surprisingly, the Giants decided not to place any kind of tag on McKinney. It was reported that they were considering using the transition tag on him rather than the traditional franchise tag. This would have given McKinney the right to talk to other teams while saving the Giants money. However, in the end, this did not transpire.
Xavier McKinney’s Career Stats
So, how has McKinney done throughout his NFL career? Let’s say he picked a good time to be a free agent. Last season, McKinney had three interceptions and two fumble recoveries. The two fumble recoveries are the only ones in his NFL career.
McKinney has made it clear that he wants to be paid what he is worth. It appears that he has several suitors. However, after what the Giants went through with Barkley, perhaps they are getting ready to make a big splash with McKinney.
