The New York Giants have been heavily scouting North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye leading up to the NFL Draft. The Giants are keeping their options open as to whether to draft a quarterback or a wide receiver with the sixth selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Maye played three seasons at North Carolina. A season ago, he completed 63.3% of his passes for 3,608 yards, 24 touchdowns, and nine touchdowns. He also rushed for 449 yards on 112 carries and nine touchdowns, along with averaging 4.0 yards per carry.
Maye can go from anywhere between two and six in the 2024 NFL Draft. There is no doubt that the Chicago Bears are going to draft Caleb Williams first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Washington Commanders are leaning towards drafting quarterback Jayden Daniels from LSU second overall.
If Maye were to get past the second pick, would the Giants trade up with the New England Patriots to draft him or would they wait to get him?
The New York Giants Would Have To Trade Up With Either the New England Patriots or the Arizona Cardinals In Order to Draft Drake Maye
In order for the Giants to get Maye in the 2024 NFL Draft, they are going to either want to trade with New England or Arizona. The Patriots dropping from three to six would possibly be too far for them. New England is going to want to draft a quarterback and they have their eyes on J.J. McCarthy from Michigan.
If the Patriots kept the pick and went with McCarthy, then the Giants would have to go to number four and make a deal with the Arizona Cardinals. Arizona would drop from four to six and they would be able to get one of the wide receivers still on their big board. Malik Nabers or Marvin Harrison Jr. would be the pick at number five then for the Los Angeles Chargers.
One of the reasons why the Giants can not sit and wait for Drake Maye is because the Minnesota Vikings would look to jump New York for a quarterback. Minnesota has the 11th and the 23rd selections in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
New York’s quarterbacks are Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, and Tommy DeVito heading into next season. Drake Maye has a higher upside than all three of those quarterbacks combined. He is only 21 years old and is 6’4″ and weighs 230 pounds. Maye would be a prototypical quarterback that head coach Brian Daboll would love to get his hands on.
However, what will General Manager Joe Schoen decide to do? It is either Drake Maye or one of the wide receivers with the sixth selection in the 2024 NFL Draft for the Giants organization.
