The New York Giants have a lot of work to do this offseason. Right now, the Giants are facing an identity crisis and hold the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. New York has a lot of holes on their roster to fill. So, should they move down in the NFL Draft to address more of these issues? Let’s break this down.
Trading Down Due to Lack of Cap Space?
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report discussed each team’s best trade scenario in an article heading into this offseason. The article discussed the New York Giants trading down in the first round of the upcoming draft. Now, this is not as obvious as the article implied.
However, this article did make two good points to support this argument. The first is the lack of salary cap space in 2024. Due to QB Daniel Jones making about $40 million next season, the Giants are projected to have less than $30 million in cap space available. As a result, the Giants are likely going to need some more affordable players to balance this out.
The second good point made here is that the Giants have multiple needs they need to address. This includes wide receiver and upgrading their offensive line. Plus, many fans would argue New York also needs to address the quarterback position as well. Trading down could potentially give them more picks to try to address this.
Drafting a Gamechanger
I am of the opinion that the Giants either need to remain where they are or even try to trade up in the NFL Draft. The reason why is there are players available this year that could change the course of their franchise. So, who could the Giants draft?
The Giants would likely have to move up to draft players such as QB Caleb Williams or WR Marvin Harrison Jr. However, if they remain where they are in the draft, there are still likely to be game changers available that may not be if they move down even five spots. Options such as QB Jayden Daniels and WR Rome Odunze could be realistic in this position.
New York Giants Moving Forward
The Giants have a lot of issues that they need to address. No matter what they decide to do with their first round pick, it is going to be important to use whatever draft picks they end up with wisely. However, I do think the Giants have too many significant needs to justify moving down in the draft.
