The Arizona Cardinals are reportedly open to trading the no. 4 pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, and according to the latest predictions, the New York Giants could be buyers.
New York has been reportedly willing to trade up in order to take a quarterback that could replace Daniel Jones, and the Cardinals might be their best chance to get that signal-caller they desire. The Giants won’t be picking until no. 6 as things currently stand, so it’s understandable why they would want to move up a bit.
New York Giants Swap Trades With Arizona Cardinals
In the latest mock draft by Kyle Stackpole of CBS Sports, he predicts the Giants to trade up for the no. 4 pick with the Cardinals in order to select JJ McCarthy out of the University of Michigan.
Considering that it will be hard for the Giants to get to the Top 3 in order to select any of the top-rated quarterbacks in Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye, they could opt for the next best option with McCarthy.
Here’s what Stackpole wrote about the potential trade and selection of McCarthy: “Surprise! There was a lot of talk at the NFL Combine about the Giants’ willingness to trade up for a QB, and they do so here — even with the top 3 off the board.”
The Giants could certainly benefit from finding a Jones successor, and in a draft filled with good quarterbacks, it might be their best chance to do so.
Considering the fact that McCarthy’s draft stock is also increasing, he might not be a bad choice for the Giants at all.
Do the New York Giants Really Need To Trade Up for JJ McCarthy?
Now the big question is if the New York Giants really need to move up the draft boards to select JJ McCarthy. After all, the Arizona Cardinals are willing to trade down because they don’t need a quarterback with Kyler Murray in the fold.
There is a good chance that McCarthy is still available for them to take at no. 6 even if they don’t make a trade with the Cardinals. So they don’t really need to spend some more for a player that is still within reach.
Wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. is the best non-QB prospect after the Top 3 picks, and if the Cardinals don’t get to trade their pick, it’s hard to see them passing on the Ohio State product. The Los Angeles Chargers select at no. 5, and they don’t need a quarterback since they already have Justin Herbert.
In a scenario that McCarthy gets drafted before their turn, the Giants still have a number of options with Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix up for grabs. Again, it’s a good quarterback class, and the New York franchise might not need to overthink this one out.
It remains to be seen what the Giants will do. CBS Sports’ prediction speaks volumes of how much McCarthy has proven himself as an elite QB at the NFL Scouting Combine. But given the current situation, New York will have to play it smart and assess everything before trading up.
