It was clear to many that the divorce between the New York Giants and Saquon Barkley would be anything but nice. The dispute between the two sides has been well-documented ever since the Giants have shown hesitation in offering Barkley a new contract.
Now that Barkley will be suiting up for the Philadelphia Eagles, whatever bridges were left between him and the organization have been burned.
One Giants legend even went so far as to send out a couple of choice words Barkley’s way. The now-former Giant didn’t shy away from controversy and fought back with a social media post.
Tiki Barber blasts Saquon Barkley over decision to leave the New York Giants
Tiki Barber is a beloved icon among New York Giants fans for his fierce loyalty to the organization. He played his entire professional career with the team. While he didn’t win a Super Bowl ring during his time, he’s all about showing loyalty to the Giants.
He expressed his disdain towards Barkley’s decision to leave the Giants, which he made clear during his weekly WFAN radio show, as reported by ESPN’s Jordan Raanan:
“He’s dead to us now. He’s dead to us. You’re dead to us, Saquon,” Barber said with a smile and chuckle upon learning the news during the “Evan and Tiki” show. “Good luck. You’re dead to me.”
It’s understandable why he would feel so fiercely loyal to the New York Giants. In his ten years as a Giant, he ran for 10449 yards and 55 touchdowns. Moreover, his most productive period as a Giant was during his final years in the NFL.
For Barkley to move away from the team and choose to relocate to a division rival in the Eagles is the highest form of treachery in his book.
Saquon Barkley fights back, calls Barber a hater
If Barber thought Barkley would take the slander with a smile on his face, he made sure that the Gaints great knew what he thought of him.
Raanan quoted his response:
Barkley reposted the video with the comment: “lol yup you’re the prime example of loyalty to a team.. I got the deal I wanted, secured more gm which wasn’t given to me before… so if fans are gonna hate me for that so be it! But I never turned my back on my teammates and always had theirs”
He then wrote in a follow-up post: “@TikiBarber you been a hater since I got to New York … and all the “Dead to me” talk don’t smile in my face when you see me”
Barkley had a strong start to his New York Giants career in 2018, rushing for 1307 yards and 11 touchdowns. While injuries have derailed his development, he managed to tally an impressive 5211 rushing yards and 35 touchdowns in his six years with the team. More impressively, he managed this while missing out on most of 2020 due to injury.
Fans should better watch out for when the Giants face the Eagles at the MetLife Stadium this season, because the fans will let him know what they think of him.
