The New York Giants will be looking at wide receiver prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft and Rome Odunze is one of the top wide receivers in this NFL Draft class. In ESPN’s Mel Kiper’s latest mock draft, he has the Giants selecting Odunze sixth overall.
There is no doubt wide receiver is a position of need for this football team. A season ago with the Washington Huskies, he caught 92 passes for 1,640 yards receiving and 13 touchdowns, along with averaging 17.8 yards per catch.
He also rushed for 37 yards on two carries and a score and averaged 18.5 yards per carry. The New York Giants need a number-one wide receiver badly. With three quarterbacks possibly going in the top five, either Marvin Harrison Jr, of Ohio State, Malik Nabers of LSU, or Rome Odunze from Washington will be available to them with that selection.
Mel Kiper Jr. said about the Giants going with Odunze with the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by saying:
“The Giants are coming off a disastrous season in which they ranked 29th in points scored per game on offense (14.0), 30th in yards per play (4.5), and 32nd in sack rate per dropback (12.8%). That was with only six games from Daniel Jones, though, and the quarterback should have recovered from his knee injury by the start of the 2024 season. So what’s the best way to ensure that doesn’t happen again? Get Jones some help. They have too many Nos. 2 and 3 receivers. Odunze, who caught 92 passes for 1,640 yards and 13 touchdowns last season, could be their No. 1 guy.”
The New York Giants Drafting Rome Odunze Would Immediately Upgrade the Wide Receiver Room
If general manager Joe Schoen decides to take Odunze sixth overall, it would upgrade the wide receiver room immediately. They have some nice number two’s and number three’s on the roster, but they don’t have a game-changer yet.
Wan’Dale Robinson, Darius Slayton, and Jalin Hyatt would be very nice complementary pieces as the second, third, and fourth receivers for the Giants along with Rome Odunze. Parris Campbell and Isaiah Hodgins probably don’t fit into the New York Giants’ plans at the wide receiver position for next season.
Rome Odunze would become the number-one wide receiver in a hurry. They haven’t had a game-changing number-one wide receiver since drafting Odell Beckham Jr. from LSU a decade ago. It’s been a long time since they have had that kind of wide receiver.
It’s a quarterback and wide-receiver-friendly league. The New York Giants offense would improve immediately with this selection. However, a lot of things can change between the end of the NFL scouting combine and the NFL Draft next month also.
