The New York Giants are scouting quarterback Drake Maye in the 2024 NFL Draft. In the latest mock draft projection, according to Sports Illustrated is quarterback Drake Maye will be selected sixth overall from North Carolina.
Maye is one of the top three quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft. They currently have Caleb Williams from USC going number one to the Chicago Bears and Jayden Daniels from LSU going number two to the Washington Commanders.
Maye a season ago with the North Carolina Tar Heels completed 63.3% of his passes for 3,608 yards, 24 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. His passing yards and touchdowns dipped from his junior season when he threw for 4.321 yards and 38 touchdowns in that season.
There are a lot of question marks about the future at the quarterback position for the Giants. They signed Daniel Jones to a four-year deal worth $160 million last offseason and did not live up to standards. He also tore his ACL in Week 9 against the Las Vegas Raiders ending his season.
Head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen can not bank on Jones in year three and need to draft a quarterback to reset the clock to secure their job security. Drafting Drake Maye would help that case moving forward.
Tyrod Taylor is also a free agent and Tommy DeVito was a nice story last season for the Giants, but they are both not the answer long-term for the Giants.
New York Giants’ Potential Future Quarterback Drake Maye Scouting Report
Kyle Crabbs of Athlon Sports back on July 24, 2023, wrote about Maye by saying:
“North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye enters the 2024 NFL Draft cycle with a reputation as a top-eligible quarterback. Maye boasts a versatile skill set for the position and a big-time arm, very much fitting into the modern mold of ideal physical attributes for the position. “
Drake Maye is a prototypical NFL quarterback. He has all of the physical tools to succeed in the NFL and also had some wow moments in college with the North Carolina Tar Heels. Maye would be an upgrade at quarterback over Daniel Jones right away.
Crabbe also added about Maye’s scouting report by saying:
“If you dig the long ball, grinding the tape on Maye should be your new favorite pastime. He offers easy gas, good touch vertically and has shown a very good ability to pace the football into holes against zone downfield. He routinely beats the safety on seams and go-routes on the outside. I have enjoyed the moments when he’s put throws on the back shoulder up the field when the windows get especially tight.”
If the Giants took him in the 2024 NFL Draft and if Jones isn’t ready to go, then Drake Maye would be thrown right into the fire and be the Week 1 starter of the 2024 NFL season for the Giants. He is 21 years old and will be 22 years old when the NFL season begins.
